Hacken is proud to help secure Base Chain’s critical infrastructure through three targeted security assessments. Our engagement comes at a critical moment for the industry. According to the Hacken TRUST Report, Web3 projects have already suffered over $3.6 billion in losses this year, the highest figure to date.
About Base: An Open Stack for the Global Economy
Base was launched by Coinbase in 2023 as an open, secure, and scalable foundation for the global onchain economy. Since then, Base Chain has become one of the fastest-growing blockchain networks in the world, securing over $12 billion in assets and processing more than 4.7 billion transactions.
Base focuses on real-world usability, simplifying access, accelerating development, and connecting millions of users and builders through products like Base App and Base Pay.
How Hacken Helped Secure Base’s Multi-Layer Architecture
Base engaged Hacken for a comprehensive independent security review of Base’s multi-layer infrastructure, focusing on scalability, reliability, and operational security.
• Blockchain Protocol Audit
• Cloud Security Review
• RPC Stress Testing
Each review focused on strengthening Base’s backbone (from RPC endpoints to cloud environments and protocol-level logic) ensuring resilience, reliability, and operational security throughout the system.
Blockchain Protocol Audit
Base Chain, built on the OP Stack and comprising components written in Golang, Rust, and Solidity, was evaluated under adversarial and high-throughput conditions. Our blockchain protocol assessment focused on the Fault Proof System, Sequencer, and the multi-client architecture, using a realistic setup and extensive stress testing to measure performance, surface bottlenecks, and determine the system’s scalability ceiling. Special attention was given to Base’s EIP-4844-related blob handling and the batcher’s behavior under load and edge-case conditions, examining how these pathways affect overall integrity, consistency, and stability.
RPC Stress Testing
We conducted a comprehensive stress test of Base’s public RPC endpoints (Mainnet and Sepolia testnet). These are key access points for querying blockchain data, executing smart contracts, and broadcasting transactions. The assessment verified the enforcement of rate limits and tested multiple Ethereum JSON-RPC functions related to blocks, gas estimation, account balances, and transaction handling. The goal was to evaluate system resilience, identify bottlenecks or misconfigurations, and confirm that Base’s infrastructure can maintain consistent performance and fair resource usage under sustained load.
Cloud Security Review
As part of Hacken Penetration Testing, our team also conducted a comprehensive review of Base’s cloud infrastructure to ensure it meets the highest standards of scalability, access control, and operational security. The assessment examined network segmentation, identity management, continuous monitoring, and automation resilience mechanisms, highlighting a mature, security-driven cloud architecture built for enterprise-grade Web3 operations.
Strengthening Trust Across the Onchain Economy
At Hacken, we’re proud to support Base in bringing Coinbase’s standards of trust, compliance, and security into the onchain economy. Our work helps ensure that the reliability trusted across Coinbase’s products is reflected in Base’s onchain infrastructure, enabling secure, user-controlled trading at scale.
